![]() When a child shows extremely withdrawn behavior along with signs of anxiety in the presence of strangers, he or she may be suffering from an imbalance in the brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. As the name implies, neurotransmitters communicate signals to other neuronal cells and thus control every aspect of behavior. Some of these chemical molecules also work in concert, helping raise the levels of one or more neurotransmitters while at other times down regulating the activity. An accurate assessment of the levels of dopamine, GABA, adrenaline, noradrenalin and serotonin will reveal whether the behavior is a result of significant imbalances in the neurotransmitter metabolism. Just as aggressive behavior which can result in socially disruptive actions needs to be moderated, extremely withdrawn behavior may require intervention if it affects the general social and classroom performance of a child.
